The early years? I think that depends on your age. Early years could mean the 1900’s or any decade until now. Oh well, early for me are the 1950’s and 1960’s which I believe had some of the nicest automobiles of modern times. We could go back as far as David Dunbar Buick, a Scottish immigrant that came to America at the age of 2. But unless you are fascinated by automotive history, this is a fairly complex and more business that car type of story. In the 1950’s, cars like the 1953 Ford Victoria hardtop or the 1959 Ford Galaxie were among what I consider the nicest and perhaps the best engineered vehicles of that era. If you can remember the sweeping two-tone paint schemes, the use of chrome and stainless steel to make wheel-wells stand-out or grills appear ominous. If you want to really see a beast, if you ever have an opportunity to examine the grill on a 1957 Nash Ambassador, it is gracefull but over-powering! A favourite of mine is the 1958 Lincloln Mark III. It was a stylish automobile with a 430 cubic inch motor. You could load this baby-up with air conditionin, power windows, power vent windows and even electric door-locks! Now while that may seem very rudimentary today, in the 1950’s those were rare options, Many consumers in that high-end market felt the styling was too radical or perhaps not radical enough for their liking. So this style of Lincoln was short-lived. Perhaps it was the reverse opening trunk that turned people off or maybe it was because Lincoln had still not achieved status parity with Cadillac. In any case the 1958 Lincoln was not a hit and the car was completely re-vamped for 1959. Ahead to the early 1960’s. Imagine a wgite 1961 Chevrolet Impala coupe with blue cloth interior and quad headlights. Or how about a 1962 red Buick Electra convertible with black leather interior? Or how about a fire-white 1969 Mustang Mach I? These were cars that displayed both status and pride. As pretty as these cars are, my favourite may surprise you. For me, it is a 1966 Mercury Park Lane convertible whicb listed out at just over $3600.00.Jamaican Yellow with a black top and black interior. Automatic (Merc-O-Matic) with power windows, power steering, power brakes and power top. A hefty land-yaght with awesome power from the 390 V8 under the hood. This is a rare car and not often seen in restored condition. Options available include a rear seat radio speaker, power seats and white walled tires. While this car may seem a bit unusual that is because it is. Wheelbase was 123″ and it weighed-in at nearly four thousand pounds. Not your econo car! The over-all length was a whopping 220″, which is about how long most driveways are today. Not a car for shuttling the kids to and from the park or the ball game. This is a road machine that can be enjoyed and savoured. Imagine the looks from people as you cruise down the streets or even better the highway, which is where this car shines. Smooth, powerful and eye-catching. This is what owning a classic car is all about!
